"Resident" means you've established domicile in the state — not just that you're present temporarily on a visa.

International Driving Permit (IDP) — what it is and do you need one?
When you need an IDP in the US

The US does not formally require an IDP for visitors — your foreign license + passport is sufficient in all 50 states. However, some car rental companies require an IDP if your foreign license is not in English or Latin script. Getting one is cheap insurance.

How to get a US-recognized IDP (before you leave home)

Get your IDP in your home country before traveling to the US. In most countries, the national automobile association (like the RAC, ADAC, or AAA equivalent) issues them for $20–40. They're valid for 1 year. Do not pay for an IDP in the US — these are scams. The AAA issues IDPs only to US license holders, not to foreign visitors.

    IDP scam warning

Many websites sell "International Driver's Permits" or "International Driver's Licenses" to people already in the US. These are NOT official and are NOT recognized by US law enforcement. Only an IDP issued by your home country's official automobile association is valid.

    Car rental tip

If renting a car in the US: call ahead and confirm what documents they need. Most major agencies (Enterprise, Hertz, Avis) accept foreign licenses in English or Latin characters without an IDP. Non-Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Thai, etc.) → bring an IDP.

License reciprocity — which countries can skip the road test?

Some US states have reciprocity agreements with specific countries — letting you exchange your foreign license for a US license without taking a road test. Agreements vary significantly by state. Here are the most common:

    🇨🇦
    Canada
Reciprocity in most states. Usually exchange without written or road test. Bring Canadian license + required docs.
    Most states — exchange only
    🇩🇪

    Before the test
    Book your appointment early

In busy states (NY, CA, MA, WA), slots book out 3–8 weeks. Reserve your slot as soon as you have your learner's permit. Check daily for cancellations.

Practice in the exact area near the DMV

Drive the streets around the testing center multiple times before your appointment. Know the school zones, speed limits, tricky intersections, and parking spots.

Inspect the car you'll use for the test

The examiner will check: working brake lights, turn signals, horn, mirrors, windshield (no major cracks), seatbelts, and valid registration/insurance card. Fix any issues beforehand.

Study your state's specific traffic laws

Each state has unique rules: NY's 5-hour course, OH's cone maneuverability test, MA's rotary right-of-way. Download your state's official driver manual and re-read it before the test.

    During the test
Exaggerate your mirror checks — make them visible

Examiners watch for head movement. Before every lane change, glance at your left mirror, center mirror, right mirror, and blind spot — making distinct head movements each time. Many people fail because the examiner couldn't see them check.

Come to a complete stop — count to 2

Rolling stops are the #1 cause of road test failures. At every stop sign, stop fully (weight shifts forward, car is completely stationary) and count 2 seconds before proceeding. This applies even with no other traffic present.

    Approach intersections cautiously

Even on a green light, slow slightly and scan left-right before entering. Examiners want to see defensive driving — especially at uncontrolled or blind intersections.

    🅿️
Parallel parking: go slow, use reference points

Most examiners allow a 3-point correction during parallel parking. The key is not speed — it's ending up within 12–18 inches of the curb. Practice the same reference points every time.

If you're nervous, say so — and ask for repetition

It's OK to politely tell the examiner you're a bit nervous. If you don't understand an instruction due to language barrier or nerves, calmly ask them to repeat it. Do not guess — pull to the side if confused.

Most common road test failures — and how to fix them
    Rolling stop at stop sign

Practice counting "one, two" out loud at every stop. Car must be fully stationary before wheels stop moving.

Not checking mirrors / blind spots

Make head movements obvious. Check mirrors in this sequence: center → side → shoulder check, before every lane change.

Speed limit violations (too fast OR too slow)

Driving 5+ mph under the limit is also marked down. Match traffic flow and posted limits exactly.

    Improper lane changes

Signal early (100 feet before), check mirrors + blind spot, execute smoothly. Never change lanes in an intersection.

Parallel parking too far from curb

Must be within 12–18 inches. Go slow, use a fixed reference point (rear window corner / door handle aligned with curb).

    Not yielding at uncontrolled intersections

Slow before every uncontrolled intersection even on green. Yield to pedestrians unconditionally.

    Following too closely

Maintain 3-second following distance in normal conditions. Increase to 4+ in rain, heavy traffic, or residential zones.

    Improper turn positioning

Left turn from the left lane, right turn from the right lane — and end up in the correct corresponding lane after turning.
