Common questions

Answers newcomers actually need.

Most immigrants can apply for an SSN at a Social Security Administration office. You'll need your visa, passport, and Form I-94. Work-authorized immigrants apply in person; some apply through their employer or school. Use the SSN & ITIN Guide for step-by-step instructions for your visa type.
Yes. Many US banks accept an ITIN or foreign passport in place of an SSN — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and many credit unions. You'll typically need your passport, a secondary ID, and proof of US address. Use the Bank Finder for banks that accept your specific documents.
SNAP eligibility depends on your immigration status and income. Most lawful permanent residents qualify after 5 years. Refugees and asylees qualify immediately. Income must be under 130% of the Federal Poverty Level. Use the Benefits Checker to see your exact eligibility by state.
Yes. Under Plyler v. Doe, all children in the US have the right to free public education regardless of immigration status. Schools cannot require immigration documents as a condition of enrollment. You need proof of age, immunization records, and proof of residency in the school district. An SSN is NOT required.
Start with a secured credit card — you put down a deposit that becomes your credit limit. Pay the full balance every month. After 6–12 months of on-time payments, your score will typically reach 650+. Use the Credit Builder to find the right card and track your progress.
Requirements vary by state. Most require proof of identity (passport + visa), 2 documents proving state address, and SSN or proof of SSN ineligibility. Some states (CA, NY, IL) issue licenses to undocumented immigrants. Use the DMV Guide for your state's exact requirements.
